City Nature Challenge: ElectroFishing Nose Creek

April 28, 2019 @ 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm

***Schedule Change!***
Because of this incredible storm that we are experiencing, we are moving the ElectroFishing event back to 12pm! This will be an incredible opportunity to see how these large cloud bursts affect small creek systems and still document city nature! The street trees, flora, and fauna will all be dramatically changed over night. Keep posting your observations even if they are before(already photographed) / after (burdened with snow).

Have you ever heard of Electrofishing? If not, this event is for you! We will be electrofishing on Nose Creek near its confluence with the Bow River to document as many fish species as we can in the area.

Everyone is welcome to come and see how electrofishing works and get a chance to learn how to identify fish species. We hope to bring awareness to the species that occur in Nose Creek and threats from invasive species such as goldfish/ Prussian carp and whirling disease. Everyone is welcome to come help identify and measure the fish that we capture.

*** Electrofishing activities will be limited to qualified personnel but anyone with chest waders and a good set of boots is welcome to try and catch some aquatic invertebrates using a variety of methods.

What to Bring:
Create your iNaturalist account before the event. You can download the app or sign-up online.
Camera, phone to make your observations
If you wish to get in the water please bring a pair of chest waders with wading boots (please no felt soled boots)
Pack a snack/lunch/water
Weather appropriate clothing and footwear

We’ll start by deploying some minnow traps near the Telus Spark Center and teach you about the basic of electrofishing as a scientific method for sampling fish populations. Afterwards we’ll get in the water, start fishing, and sample for aquatic invertebrates.

***You are welcome to angle on your own but are required to have all proper permits and licenses.

Meeting location:
Anyone with a zoo parking pass can park at the lower section of the Calgary Zoo parking lot. The site can also be accessed by turning onto Centre Ave (between the Telus Spark Centre and Zoo parking lots) and follow the road to the Memorial Drive overpass. Please see photo in comments.

Everyone is welcome to just show up. If you will attend as a large group please contact to confirm.
